Remember Batkid? Who reminded us that the world isn’t all that bad? His story is one of the more notable wishes granted by the famous Make-A-Wish Foundation ; which turns charity donations into fantastic experiences for children with serious illnesses. However, the question of if it is a worthy charity has been asked by no less a person than the philosopher and champion of effective altruism Professor Peter Singer. In his Washington Post op-ed , published in response to the Batkid event, he argues that Make-A-Wish is nice, but that the money really doesn’t accomplish much and that we would do better to donate the money to other charities. While it might seem that only the most miserly or calloused individual could object to what Make-A-Wish does, Singer brings up an important point: our charity dollars can also save countless lives. As a utilitarian philosopher, Singer has argued that we have an obligation to donate what we can to help others — and he puts his money where his mouth his. He’s the founder of the nonprofit The Life You Can Save, which helps fight extreme poverty and its effects. Our fundraising efforts, fiscal practices, and business operations all are designed to support a single purpose: to grant wishes that change lives. This national charity monitoring organization is affiliated with the Better Business Bureau and confirms whether a nonprofit’s practices related to governance, fund raising, solicitations and informational materials, and expenses meet their criteria for fair and honest dealings and ethical practices. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. Every dollar our chapter receives aids us in our mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. What are your sources of funding?

How Your Gift is Spent
I had cancer and was offered a wish. They came to my house and told me all about these things they would do. It mostly involved meeting these stupid celebrities that donated their time to the foundation, going on a vacation, or something attention seeking like throwing a first pitch at a baseball game. I was still in a cast from my legs reconstructive surgery and wasn’t cleared for travel. I didn’t want to meet a celebrity while looking like crap. I knew I would only be used for good publicity and get sympathy. The attention seeking things were also out for the same reason. I didn’t want people to know I had cancer because I knew I would get judged for it. They may not have been negative but I always wanted people to judge me for who I am and not treat me differently just because I had cancer. So that was out. I remember asking for like a game room for my house, but the said they couldn’t.
